Expert Panels
"Saving the
DNA and the viable cells of the world's endangered animals"
Expert panels are being formed for each of the major animal groups to determine which species are most urgently in need of sample collection and how to go about it. The panel members are using species lists from national authorities, specialist groups, IUCN red data lists and lists of species susceptible to climate change, using their expertise to decide priorities. Affiliation with other specialist groups, such as the zoo's own taxon advisory groups, and the IUCN's Species Survival Commission, will be made.
The first group for the land molluscs has been set up in association with experts from the Natural History Museum in London. A panel to look after the marine and freshwater fish species is being formed by the Cryobiology Group at The University of Bedfordshire. A joint effort by the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the IUCN's Species Survival Commission and the Conservation Breeding Specialist Group have created an Amphibian Ark Cryobanking Advisory Committee to take on the amphibians.
