WHY SAVE DNA OF ENDANGERED ANIMALS?
The Frozen Ark collects, preserves and saves DNA of endangered animals. David Attenborough collected our first DNA sample from Anne the elephant at Whipsnade Zoo. Since then we have collected, preserved and stored over 48,000 samples from 5,000 species. No animals are ever harmed in the collection of DNA.
As the population of a species becomes smaller, biodiversity is lost over generations. This inbreeding threatens the long-term survival of species through a gradual inability to successfully breed healthy young. By collecting, preserving and saving the DNA of endangered species, we are creating a sample bank of DNA that can be used by future conservationists to protect these species. DNA will never be released for commercial use.
